How cool would it be to build an instrument model and be able to play it, too? Well now you can do just that with this gorgeous and detailed Hurdy-Gurdy model by UGears. Rarely seen in modern times, Hurdy Gurdies are an interesting instrument from history generally thought to have originated in either Europe or the Middle East sometime before the 11th century A.D. They were quite popular in Renaissance times and were one of the favored instruments of bards and mistrals. They are a stringed instrument that produces sound by a rosined wheel rubbing against the strings and made to turn with a hand crank. The wheel works similar to the bow of a fiddle. Notes are played by pressing the "tangents" which are small wedge shaped buttons that press on the strings and change the pitch. Most Hurdy-Gurdies also have one or more drone strings, which gives a constant droning sound reminiscent of bagpipes.
Not only is this a fully functioning instrument, but the detail and scroll work make this piece very beautiful to look at and would be an enjoyable display piece in any home.
